When children start down the path of video game fandom, you know it’ll only be a matter of time before they want to play a shooter. First- and third-person shooters are some of the most popular game genres available, back to even the days of Nintendo and Duck Hunt. However, that doesn’t mean that you should unlock the gate to these games and have your child, pre-teen, or teen run freely among a field that includes some graphically great attractions.

HOW WE REVIEWED

We’ve been able to play all these games and have enjoyed every single one of them. We also used reviews from other websites and consumers to ensure that we turned over every possible rock to find the perfect 10 games for the list.

While many of these games are from various series, we tried to keep the list to only one title from each one. The exception is Portal 1 and 2, which are two of the best games of all-time.

To split up the list, we created three groups. The first is filled with genuinely great games. Then we have franchise favorites, which covers shooters from popular fictional universes like Star Wars and James Bond. The last group is silly games that turn the shooter genre into something uniquely aimed at kids while still being fun for older ages.

3 out of 5 Stars

About the product

  • Award-winning, innovative gameplay
  • The first first-person puzzle action adventure game
  • Two bonus games introduce new play challenges
  • Support for level editing and mod creation - build your own Portal puzzles
  • Hours of single player gaming

Originally released as part of The Orange Box bundle for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Portal (sometimes referred to as Portal: Still Alive when purchased by itself) took the gaming world by storm with its quirky humor, devious puzzles, and creative spin on the shooter genre. Instead of weapons that shoot bullets or laser beams, you’re equipped with two portal guns that will mark floors, walls, or platforms with endpoints of a virtual tunnel. You’ll be required to think three-dimensionally and take into consideration basic physics principles like momentum to fling your character, Chell, through a series of mazes.

If that sounds confusing, well, it can be, but the first few levels provide a gentle introduction that allows you to pick things up quickly. This game straddles the line of fun-to-play and challenging with its only downside being that it’s a relatively short game.

Relax With Bubble Shooting Games

Portal is the appetizer to the five-star main course that is Portal 2. Widely considered one of the greatest games of all time, Portal 2 takes the chaotic, sometimes even anarchic, storyline of its first iteration and magnifies it tenfold.

One of the most significant additions is a character voiced by UK comedian Stephen Merchant. His character acts as both guide and naïve partner in the beginning parts of the game before things go a bit crazy. If you like Portal, Portal 2 is an absolute necessity.

MIRROR’S EDGE by Electronic Arts

About the product

  • Heroes Emerge - A young woman without a home until she is taken in and trained by the Runners.
  • Your incredible gifts allow you to swiftly navigate the city while eluding those who would try to stop you.
  • Go Vertigo - Heights create vertigo, movements flow naturally, collisions are felt realistically, and muscles and tendons strain as you chase and are chased throughout the city.
  • Slip off the Edge - Perform amazing acrobatic moves from below street level, through buildings, and up to the dizzying heights of hyper real skyscrapers as you face off against your enemies or run for your life.
  • Unrivaled Immersion - An exciting mix of chase, intense combat, strategy and puzzles draw you into a world like never before.

Mirror’s Edge is another game that’s very much a first-person shooter, but involves little to no shooting. Instead, equipped with little else than a first-person perspective of the world, you are left to engage in a series of parkour-involved getaways and voyages across a city to hand-deliver messages so that the fictional totalitarian government that controls everything in the game doesn’t intercept them.

What makes Mirror’s Edge unique is its gameplay. There’s no heads-up-display, meaning no health bar, ammo count, or on-screen radar to guide you through each mission. Instead, you must rely on your wits to survive. Mirror’s Edge is breath-stoppingly exciting and maintains a frenetic pace until its conclusion.

  • Meet Noble Team. For the first time, players will fight alongside a squad of iconic Spartan soldiers, each with deadly talents as unique as their individual personalities and customized gear
  • An intense campaign. Live the events that set the stage for the Halo trilogy as the UNSC and Covenant clash at the height of their military power
  • Stunning technical advancements. Halo: Reach takes a massive leap forward through all-new engine technology designed to take full advantage of next-generation graphics, audio, special effects, AI and animation
  • The definitive multiplayer experience. Halo: Reach builds on the success of its predecessors, setting a new standard for competitive gameplay, customization, variety and community integration
  • Unparalleled feature suite. Halo: Reach expands on the industry-leading suite of features found in Halo 3, including four-player cooperative

Halo is a franchise that runs 12 titles deep, making it one of the most successful video game series of all-time and, due to its console exclusivity, one of the best reasons to purchase an Xbox. Halo: Reach exists outside of the two main trilogies that define the series, yet is perhaps the best title in the entire run.

You play not as popular main character Master Chief, but as Noble Six, another super soldier defending humanity against the antagonistic Covenant collective. This game is violent. You are killing the enemy in this war, and there is a certain level of graphicness that matches its wartime setting. However, because the villains are aliens, you never feel as queasy when participating in the violence as you would when playing certain other war-style video games.

10 best first-person shooter games of all time

Another war-based game, but this time taking place in the broader Star War universe, Battlefront (the 2015 version, not the 2005 one) has you fight your way through memorable on-screen moments, like the battle at the ice planet Hoth.

The level of violence matches that of a Star Wars movie. So, it is violent but never graphic. You will be shooting laser guns and missiles and even perform Darth Vader’s famous force choke, but you won’t see blood or guts. In fact, unlike Halo: Reach, this game is rated for teens.

If you or your child is a Star Wars fan, this is a great game to play. Its gameplay can be somewhat impenetrable to those new to shooters, so it’s not a great first game for anyone.

  • Blast more classic Bond villains away using an impressive arsenal of powerful weapons
  • Play Covert, Elimination, Defense and Assault game modes across 11 unlockable challenge areas in the new MI-6 Ops mode

The classic Nintendo 64 game GoldenEye is available in a remastered format for newer consoles, including those in the Xbox and PlayStation lines. If you grew up playing GoldenEye, this remastered version will ratchet up the nostalgia and allow you to connect across generations as your child masters the final aspects of James Bond-style spycraft.

While James Bond is not necessarily known for being a peaceful gentleman (even his cocktail preference involves shaking instead of gentle stirring), this game isn’t graphic with its violence. There is some blood, but no more than there is in a Pierce Brosnan-starring James Bond movie. This game offers another challenge for veterans while still being suitable for genre newcomers.

  • Online Game Code – Avatar
  • Mega Man 10;Avatar;mega man;megaman

The only side-scrolling shooter on this list, Mega Man 10 is the best title in the franchise. As a cybernetic boy whose purpose is to defeat a series of robotic big bads, you’ll learn to adapt to each villain by matching your special weapons against their specific weaknesses.

If you liked any previous entry in the Mega Man franchise, Mega Man 10 would also be right up your alley. It can be difficult, but those settings can be adjusted to make it easier for kids. Because it’s a side-scrolling platformer, you also won’t necessarily get the longest play time out of it. However, for its price of under $10, it’s an excellent value for you and your kids.

About the product

  • Requires Xbox Live Gold and an internet connection to play
  • 24-player multiplayer action: Choose your side, plants or zombies, in 24-player online battles
  • Customization: Personalize your favorite plants and zombies with hundreds of unique items and customizations
  • 4-player online co-op: Join forces with friends in online 4-player cooperative mode
  • New plants and zombies: Powerful new plants and zombies with a huge variety of abilities
  • Expansive world: Over 10 unique multiplayer and cooperative battlegrounds

An attempt to bring Call of Duty-like multiplayer to the backyard, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is the best kind of silly fun. Adapted from the tower defense series Plants vs. Zombies, Garden Warfare allows you to take control of a series of plants or zombies who are battling for supremacy over the backyard.

The game is simple, with only a handful of gameplay options, but its characters are well-balanced, meaning you can’t just pick an all-powerful one and wreak havoc. Instead, you’ll have to play through exciting maps that always seem to have something lurking around the corner.

While there is shooting in this game, your ammo takes the shape of peas, not bullets. It’s yet another fun wrinkle in a game full of them.

About the product

  • non-violent first-person shooter video game
  • total conversion of "The Ultimate
  • Doom" game engine
    cult classic!!!

The only free game on this list (because you’ll have to navigate a bevy of third-party websites to find the best download for you) ChexQuest is what would happen if you took the classic shooter Doom and inhabited its world with anthropomorphic Chex squares. Yes, this game, which initially came as a CD-ROM packaged with cereal, takes place in a world where you are a Chex cereal square trying to send oozing bad guys back to the bad breakfast dimension.

This game is 100 percent real and surprisingly fun, even with a visual quality that matches its comes-free-with-cereal aesthetic. It has a sequel, too, meaning this story is cerealized, er, serialized.

About the product

  • New weapons - New dual-wielding Splat Dualies join the action, complete with a new Dodge Roll move. Mainstays like the Splat Roller and Splat Charger have also been remixed to include new gameplay mechanics and brand-new special weapons.
  • Local and Online Multiplayer - In a first for the series, compete in local multiplayer Turf War battles, whether in TV mode or on-the-go in handheld or tabletop modes. Online battles also make a return.
  • New ways to play - Play using the Joy-Con controllers or the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, both of which allow for gyro controls for better aiming and control.

The most expensive, and most recently released, title on this list, the Nintendo Switch’s Splatoon 2 takes place in a brightly drawn cartoon world where the only weapon is your ink cannon. That’s right, instead of bullets or cannonballs, you’re inking your way through each level.

If your kids are drawn to the brilliantly-painted environment and frenzied gameplay, this may be the game for them. Because it’s still sold at its $59.99 price point, feel free to rent it first before (or checking out the first Splatoon) before shelling out for this one.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

Shooters don’t have to be violent to be fun, so even if you are hesitant about exploring this video game genre with your child, there are plenty of titles out there to play. If you’re looking for a great game, regardless of category, it’s hard to go wrong with the Portal series. For those whose kids are already locked in on a favorite sci-fi franchise, Star Wars: Battlefront is a great choice, too. Finally, for those who want some silliness in their life, check out Plants vs. Zombies; Garden Warfare to give peas a chance.
